With the Christmas party season now upon us and the cold, dark nights closing in, it’s easy to lose the motivation for staying healthy and keeping fit. Don’t be that person that plans to start a new fitness regime in January, if you start now, by then you will already be one month nearer to reaching your goal.
The trick is to start off with a small aim that will help you reach your goal. It could be something like not snacking between meals or ensuring you go for an evening walk for 10-15 minutes. You are much more likely to succeed if you ease your way into it, after all, looking after yourself should be fun. Think of it more as a lifestyle change not a passing fad or diet.
If you have a hectic week with meetings, business trips, parties etc., it’s easy to let your fitness regime fall by the wayside and use the excuse of having no spare time. This doesn’t have to be the case! HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) can be your go to thing. Squeeze a 15-minute session into your lunch hour, in your hotel room or before you indulge on that work Christmas party.
High intensity workouts will leave your body burning calories long after you have finished and is a process known as EPOC (excess post-exercise oxygen consumption). Think of your body as if it was a car, the faster/harder/longer it is driven the more the engine heats up. Once the journey finishes, the engine takes a while to cool down. This is exactly the same as your metabolism, with some studies suggesting that the effects can last up to 36 hours post workout.
Trust us, you will be thankful you started now and not in January.
